A little help on piano exercises?
on: September 23, 2010, 04:39:59 PM
I was wondering which composer(s) do you suggest I should practice piano exercises from? I currently have some Czerny and Hanon (Since they were the only ones I have heard of that composed piano exercises before). But I recently heard of Hermann Berens, will his exercises be beneficial to the learning pianist? Are there more exercises out there that I have never heard of but are very helpful?
P.S. I stopped working on Hanon's exercises, I only use Czerny's as of now.

The best ones of that sort are Isidor Philipp -

Thank you very much.
His exercises seem very interesting, and a lot of people have only good things to say about his exercises.
Unfortunately, I could not find any of his books in my usual store. I personally don't have an experience on shopping online, but I will try it for this one. Thank you again, this will certainly keep me busy with practicing.

When you do obtain them read the preface carefully. These are not automaton style exercises - they require musical thought throughout execution.

I was only able to find Isidore Philipp's Complete School of Technic for the Piano, are his exercises there good too? I was also hoping to find a copy of his Exercises for Independence of Fingers on the internet and print it, alas, my search was to no avail.

I only know the Independence books. Maybe Complete has the same exercises - they're all based on Dim7 chords - the best shapes for healthy strength building.

I'll probably get the Complete first, since it is the only one available, and a few comments/information I found on the internet regarding the book seemed positive. Thank you very much for introducing this composer. It really motivated me to study and I feel like I have a good direction on how to start improving my technique.
