Mid-concert instrument switch - any advice?
on: October 16, 2010, 02:55:44 AM
I have a concert coming up in March that has me a little worried.  For one half the concert I will be playing violin (standard orchestra repertoire), because I am assistant concertmaster of the orchestra and don't think I could gracefully get out of it; plus, I don't like to miss playing a concert.  For the other half I will be soloing with Saint-Saens' Piano Concerto No. 2, as well as two unaccompanied piano pieces:  Balakirev/Glinka's Lark and Liszt's Tarantella.  The piano pieces themselves are fine; but I've never split a concert between two instruments before and am a little worried about how it will go to jump right in with no chance to warm up and having just spent the last 45 minutes playing a different instrument.

Could anyone who's done a similar split concert please advise/reassure me?  Or was I daft to agree to it?  Any tips from others more experienced would be welcome!  Thanks!

 :o You're disgusting.  ;D
No, seriously, I doubt there are many people who have had your problem.  You're very fortunate to have it!  The closest I can come to that is when having to accompany a singer and then having to play the chopin polonaise or the Dante sonata.  It's very disturbing, and, in fact, I don't anymore.  At any rate, if it's only a question of 2 halves of a concert, you have the intermission time to warm-up in your dressing room. (I'm assuming there's a practise piano there, right?)
Congratulations!  Like I said, you're very lucky to have this problem!  ;D

Thank you for the encouragement!
