Beethoven Sonata for Grade 5 ABRSM?
on: July 27, 2004, 05:42:33 AM
Is there a Beethoven sonata that is suitable for Grade 5 ABRSM? I would appreciate it if someone could suggest one that I could enjoy playing.

I like op. 10 #1, in c minor.

Thank you, Rach3.
I have just listened to a midi file of the piece. It sounds rather challenging to me as a Gd. 5. I think I will go grab a book of it.

I wouldn't try op 10 # no 1 as my starting Beethoven Sonata. It is a work that look deceptively simple on paper ( especially the 1st movt, which is very difficult to play well since it requires plenty of imagination and creativity ).
For grade 5 piano, you can try playing the op 49 sonatas, they should be pretty manageable. Alternatively, you can try playing the Bohn sonatas or the Rondo in C major, they are rarely played nowadays, but still very very good early Beethoven.

I agree with Dreamaurora. Op. 49/2 should be perfectly manageable. However I find this sonata a bit dull (Beethoven thought so too), Op. 49/1 being far more musical (the rondo is a real gem). It is a bit more difficult though. Both of these however are not quite full-fledged sonatas (they were most likely composed as exercises for his students).
Why not stretch a bit and try Op. 79, which is a real sonata, and quite beautiful (the second movement is wonderful). It is considered to be around grade 7, but if you can manage grade 5 pieces, you can manage grade 7. In any case, these are the three easiest sonatas. All the others are grade 8 or beyond.
Does it have to be Beethoven? There are some really great Haydn sonatas at grade 3-6. Somewhere I have listed them. If you are interested ask.
Best wishes,
Bernhard.

Yes, the Beethoven Sonata Opus 49 no.2 was fairly easy to accomplish - my daughter (age 12) was able to play it in about a month and she is around a level 7. She challenged herself by playing it at a slightly faster tempo (and it is a bit repetitive). Good luck, Lani
