Complex Excercises
on: November 06, 2010, 12:53:05 AM
Ok, Ive been playing piano for almost ten years now, and I can play some pretty complex pieces. i just recently learned Chopin Nocturne Op.27 No.2 and it came along quite easily. After i sat down and learned Raindrop in less than 2 hours. I can also learn by ear blah blah blah.

Anyway, I used to do excercises like, 5 years ago, but they got to easy, and I stopped. So, heres what i have trouble with. My left hand is a little retarded when it comes to scales, not so good at fast paced arpeggios(i have more trouble with my right than left with these) and chord grace notes are pretty tough. What excercises should I be doing?

Of course, the first thing that comes to my mind is the Chopin etudes, but i don't know enough about them to know which ones to learn.

have you tried either the liszt technical exercises (not the etudes, there's a difference) or the brahms 51 exercises?  both should have plenty of things to address your problems.  they're both quite challenging.

Never heard of them, but ill be sure to check them out. I actually downloaded the Winter wind Etude by chopin just because its sounds amazing, but I know I still have a lot of work to do before I will be able to play it. Im also going to learn Nocturne Op.27 No.1 since I learned the No.2 already. :P

I guess, but there's probably better ways of developing your sight-reading skills.  these are more for getting your finger dexterity up to snuff.
