A piece you just have to play!

Do you experience the urge to play something that you know you shouldn't (against your teacher's wishes). But you have no way of stopping yourself from playing it. Example : I already have too much romantic music in my repertoire and am in need of musical from other periods. Should I just go with my feelings and work on pieces that I am passionate about or should I buckle down and learn an d*** Mozart sonata! (don't get me wrong, I LOVE mozart)

I'm not getting you wrong. I hate Mozart too.

I think you should spit in the grass and do the damn Mozart. But it wont make you happy. I would probably not have done it. But it depends alot on which piece you really want to play. And which Mozart Sonata you are supposed to be playing.

This is just an example. I am well familiar with the mozart sonatas as well as those by haydn, and I love to play scarlati and soler. Ultimately, all I want to do is play romantic, post romantic pieces even though I have PLENTY in my repertoire!

Yeah, I agree. And I don't hate Mozart either, actually, he's just no fun.

Haydn Sonatas are fun to play. Makes so much fun out of everything. Seems like everything is just a joke.

But I totally agree.. There's always a romantic or an Impressionistic, Expressionistic or neo-classic piece I want to learn. Or a Beethoven Sonata. But if you want to get on in life I suggest you bite the grass and play the important stuff as well.

I would like some music, but hes sonatas seem so boring. The fact is that Mozart created beautiful themes, melodic pieces which do not develop at the level of ..ie Haydn. Or Beethoven pherhaps. I would like to play Mozart, but it's not actually my first choice...

I have a couple of CD's of Mozart's sonatas on fortepiano. I think that his sonatas loose a lot on a modern instrument, some more than others. His music needs the beautifull middle register of a fortepiano, it cannot breathe on a modern steinway no matter how good the pianist.

I'd have to disagree with that opinion; I've heard a lot of classical music including Mozart's sonatas played on fortepiano, and to me fortepianos all sound like a combination between a bad harpsichord and a bad piano! :P

On the original topic, when I was younger I played Bach incessantly (while indulged by a permissive teacher).  As a result now I'm having to broaden my musical horizons.  However, to my best intentions I still find myself gravitating toward learning more Bach--it's like an addiction!
