Audition Nerves
on: November 16, 2010, 02:44:54 PM
I have an audition THIS Thursday for a college (Stetson).  A few days ago, I was playing just fine, but now, I am f*cking up everywhere, and getting frustrated up my ass!!!   Are these nerves?!?!

Should I continue to practice?  How do I keep from damaging myself in the next few days?

Nothing is going to change before thursday.  Of that you must be convinced.  So, I think you should just practise slow with the music.  Your mind has to be sure of what it's doing and not just letting the fingers run by themselves.  this is usually why we f...up.  Get a hold of yourself, know that this is just an audition, maybe even an important one, but the rest of your life is not going to be determined by the outcome, believe me.  Keep your fingers fleet by playing other stuff, scales, excercises, etc., but practise your programme slow and with intention, and you'll do fine!

I have the worst case of nerves... I get anxious very easily...
The advice I always get is to eat a banana.... :)
I agree that you should practise slowly and focus a lot on accuracy, and then play your scales.
More helpful advice I get : Don't practise too much either or second guess yourself. You were playing just fine a few days ago- if you had the ability to do that a few days ago you can do it now. Listening to the music without playing all the time helps too. A lot of people tell me to not practise at all, but I've never taken that advice =/ so I can't say how well it works...
Good luck

Birba is right. You are youand still will be youafter your audition or concert. Think in your Music and playing, enjoy the beauty of Music, alone or with one hundred of persons earing, the important is Music and beauty. When one get nervous is because he/she feels more important than music he/she is playing. But Music is the only important thing during a performance. It happens with me to forget people is there. Just forget the others and you`ll feel good and calm.
All the best to you
