Playing piano
on: November 18, 2010, 02:20:52 AM
I've entirely self-taught so I'm at a bit of a loss on many things.
1)  When playing a piece for the first time, is it good practice to play both the treble and bass at the same time?

2)  What is a good way to improve counting/Rhythm skills?

3)  What is the standard procedure when learning a piece?

Thank you.  I really enjoy piano and would like to improve.

To answer your questions, here's what I do with my early grades students:
1. When first sight-reading a piece, try to play it with both hands if possible. Do not worry about details like dynamics etc. If the piece is too difficult for that, find and play the melody first (usually with the right hand, but sometimes hands alternate), then add accompaniment part, chords, or other parts.
2. Count out loud (one-and, two-and, three-and, etc.) as you play, or use a metronome.
3. Playing a piece for the first time, do not start at a too fast tempo. And, always, before beginning to play, examine the music with your eyes and try to "hear it in your mind before you play it".
Hope this helps in a small way. :)
