How do you teach sight reading?
on: July 28, 2004, 04:55:57 PM
I'm teaching a group of 7-8 year old ex-Yamaha kids who have perfect pitch yet have very poor note reading. They take ages to read their notes and i keep telling them that in their piano exam, continuity is important and they have to move on and not take ages to read their notes! Problem is i don't know how to quicken their note reading- it seems like i've been given the task to correct what wasn't the focus in the past..their exams are coming and i'm wondering if there's any wonderful advice you guys could suggest to me..

hmmm this sounds unethical, but maybe you should have a read through this great book
https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0961596309/qid=1091082418/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl14/104-3819587-6018353?v=glance&s=books&n=507846
and steal the knowledge, teaching it as if the ideas were your own. I have been using this book for two weeks, and have improved dramatically.
Of course, the most logical thing for you to do would be to buy it and give it to them and tell them to read it. But, ....this wouldnt work because the students are 7-8 years old, and goodness...what would you do during the lesson then? hehe

I found it (with Richmann's book) very interesting !
Good luck,
