Can't believe I'm asking for this
on: November 24, 2010, 01:24:39 PM
I'm in my 10th year of lessons (with a 25 year break between years 7 & 8) and I feel like an idiot for asking this.... but does anyone know a good online resource for the meanings of symbols and dynamics markings?   I'm doing this wonderful Schubert Impromptu that I just love.  I have a recording of Brendel playing it (show-off that he is) that makes me seethe with envy when I listen to it.  I know it's the dynamics that make him play it so much better (and I admit.... a LOT more skill and talent), but I want to play it to the best of my own ability.

I can admit here that I don't actually know what Fz means (well, now I do because I found a very limited resource online), but I don't want to admit it to my teacher.   ;D  Can someone give me a site that I can bookmark?
Currently learning:
Chopin Prelude Op. 28, no. 15
Schubert Sonata in A Major, D.959: Allegretto

This compendium that has everything about everything probably has it:
https://www.dolmetsch.com/theoryintro.htm
But your teacher would probably love to be asked.  My own teacher had so much to add to it when I started studying theory, also giving his interpretation and view on those symbols.   There is so much more to it.  For example, these works get interpreted and edited, and some teachers have a lot to say about that.  It is fascinating.

Dolmetsch is a great site, but one who goes directly to the Theory section might miss that one of the most commonly used resources there is a music dictionary:

https://www.dolmetsch.com/musictheorydefs.htm

Virginia Tech has a nice online music dictionary as well, including audio that gives pronunciations:

@dss62467:  It's good to see you again.  :)

Hope it helps, Jimbo
