The Quiet Revolutionary of the Piano – Fauré’s Complete Piano Works Now on Piano Street

In the pantheon of French music, Gabriel Fauré (1845–1924) often seems a paradox—an innovator cloaked in restraint, a Romantic by birth who shaped the contours of modern French music with quiet insistence. Piano Street now provides sheet music for his complete piano works: a body of music that resists spectacle, even as it brims with invention and brilliance. Read more

Motivation: One year and a half in
on: November 27, 2010, 09:00:55 PM
Hello pianostreet,

I've started learning piano about a year and half ago, and early on it was very easy to keep myself motivated but as of late it got a lot harder, I went from 2-3 hours of practice a day to 1 to 2 and now barely an hour a day.

I still feel like Im making progress but it's much harder to see it in my day to day practices... So my question to you is: how did you deal with that problem when you faced it, when you went from a crazy fast learning curve to a slow and steady learning process.

Thanks,
Alex

You should expect to have occasional plateaus in your progress, and I think that it's also normal to experience some inconsistencies in motivation as well.  Just try not to let a plateau be the cause of waning motivation.  :)

Even "barely an hour a day" is still a decent amount of time to devote to your practice and continue advancing; a "slow and steady learning process" is definitely something to be happy about!

I think the most important element is that you continue enjoying your piano study.  Try to work on music that you love, and don't let it feel like a burden or drudgery.  Accept that peaks and valleys are unavoidable.
What passes you ain't for you.

Thanks a lot for your reply, I'll keep that in mind. It's the first time I'm really faced with a plateau, but I'll try to accept that it is normal, even if it probably wont be as easy as it sounds.

Thanks again,
Alex

I agree with stevebob and keep it up.  I feel like that sometimes too.  Especially those old songs that I used to play so well and now I have to relearn them to get up to where I was.  But I am glad that I learned piano, just wish that I had worked harder when I was little...
