on: December 10, 2010, 03:27:46 AM
hey guys
i have a question i hope i could find an answer for it from u
i have been playing keyboards in a band for 5 years now but haven't practiced that much
i know how to read sheet notes but it takes me alot to read 2 bars or something and try playing them
i think i have a good fast right hand but not that super and my left don't think it is good at all
i can play stuff like Aerith's Theme from a game called final fantasy 7 but not that perfect
the thing is...
i want to try and learn real piano
i have a large collection of books and sheets for most of the famous composers
don't know what to start with which practice book should i start with
something for czerny or maybe something for hanon
or may be bartok or any other i don't know
hope to hear your opinion in this matter and thanx alot in advance
takecare guys

Hawkranger,
What exactly is real piano? If you mean classical and looking for a starting point may I suggest something from the Baroque period. What kind of music did you play in bands? Expand with that.
I used to play bass by ear in bands when younger so I go back to the sound I'm familiar with and that helps me. Picking a composer or music you like then try to emulate it. To me it's all real piano.

First thanks for replaying
and yes i know it is all real piano
and yes i wanted to try classic music
i play symphonic power metal in the band and sometimes rock music
i thought that if i started to learn classic music and work according to a plan and from practice books i'll improve rapidly
beside there are lots of classical pieces that i dream to play that's y i want to try classic
beside i think that classic is the mother of all so i want to go for it at least in my own practice out of my band
and if u allow me to ask a stupid question what is the Baroque period  :( am not very familiar with classic stuff yet sorry for the questoin
and thanx again for the replay

Hawkranger,
Check this website out. It will describe the Baroque period better than I could. It also has links giving a run down of the other periods...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baroque_music
As far as rock music goes, that's what I played when younger. Classical is cool to be able to play and I love playing and listening to it, but the musicians I play with are more into rock and blues.
The keyboard player for Jethro Tull has a great ability of combining classical with rock. If you never heard their song ''Locomotive Breath' you should give it a listen.
I agree, classical is the mother of it all. Learning it does have many qualities, but if music is the expression of our spirits..... let it fly......

I'm curious of your favorite music and musicians?

Musically, Jimbo

Hawkranger,
When younger I played the bass in a few very good rock bands also a few blues ones. The last band I was in played a lot of cover material from Yes, Moody Blues, Jethro Tull and Pink Floyd to name a few. Did I just date myself, lol.
Anyway, the last band I was in had this keyboard player that was so fast and could emulate Rick Wakeman perfectly. I used to watch him with amazement and now I am striving to play as well.
Remember I said drawing on something familiar? That's my goal. To try playing as well as Rick Wakeman. If you haven't heard of him, check this out....

I'm attaching a pic of my keys.......
