Most important works 2000-2010
on: December 12, 2010, 01:11:29 AM
Hammer away.  A different way to look at the question of what to play in a competition.  Discuss works you love and please stay away from the rest.

To get things started, I submit to you this. :)

Admittedly entirely retro aesthetically, and yet entirely enjoyable.
Money does not make happiness, but it can buy you a piano.  :)

Fire Strings by Ishiro Nodaira, a concerto for electric guitar and orchestra.

Very influenced by the avant garde movement and a milestone in many respects.

It shows the true potential of the electric guitar more then any other classical piece.

Have you heard any Steven Mackey? That guy may give this Ishiro Nodaira (who I've never heard of) a run for his money regarding electric guitar composition prowess.

Nope, who has performed his works?

Steve Vai performed the world premiere of Fire Strings and David Tanenbaum the American premiere.

Both of them considered that work a challange of lifetime and made mistakes during their performances despite many hours of practice.

A significant problem is that very electric guitarist can sightread avantegarde music.

Steven has performed most of his own works, but other guitarists, many of whom have experience in both rock music and new classical music, have taken up his works. Mackey was recently nominated for a number of Grammys, and he even teaches at Princeton, so he isn't exactly someone who is just a fluke. You should check him out.

Here are two examples of his music I found on YouTube with electric guitars:

These are just two small examples. You'll have to buy some CDs (especially of his Grammy-nominated work) to really get what he does as a composer. His music is incredibly varied, as you can see from Micro-Concerto and the two examples.

Not saying it's the most important work of 2000-2009, though.  Music is too broad, atm, for there to be a single "most important" work.
If this work is so threatening, it is not because it's simply strange, but competent, rigorously argued and carrying conviction.

Oooooh where to start? I'll just stick with piano music for now. How about George Benjamin's Piano Figures from 2006?
