Conservatory Auditions!!!!!!
on: December 13, 2010, 05:44:00 AM
Hello everyone! I am Seth! I am new to this forum, but it looks like I great resource!

Here goes:

I am currently a high school Junior (11th grade) and I will be auditioning for music schools next year around this time.
The thing is, i have been only taking lessons for a year now. I guess i have a lot of natural talent, because I have surpassed my teacher's and everyone else's expectations. Here is what I am currently working on:

Chopin - Revolutionary Etude, Op. 10 No. 12 [DONE]
Bach - WTC Prelude No. 2 in C minor [DONE]
Beethoven - Tempest [Almost done]
No. 27
And what else should I play? Are these pieces even strong enough? I also know sonata No. 27 by Beethoven as well as Chopin's Polnaise Op. 40 No. 1. Even though I have not as of yet planned to add these to my audition program. And despite my short time playing, I have one a local piano competition with the Etude, and performed it in the talent show at my high school after having it for 3 months. I can also play the Prelude fluidly, as well as the first movement of the Sonata. Thank-you for listening anyone!! Any help and criticism would be greatly appreciated!

Hey Seth,
Let me the first to welcome you and congratulate you on your achievements. Very, very cool advancing so well so fast.
You asked a question that I'm sure everybody has their own opinion on. Mine is to look at an audition as an chance to shine. Wow your audience with sounds that are familiar but different. Playing any one of those pieces you mentioned will do but do them as you. Put your own flare into it.
If it was me I would combine a few songs into one. Start out moderate and building up to more difficult and faster parts. Play like a roller coaster making your listener's emotions ride up and down leaving them with anticipation of your next notes. Make them glad you came to play for them and in turn they will be. At least that's how I would do it.
Best of luck to you.

Musically, Jimbo
