Pick a Liszt-piece for me
on: December 13, 2010, 10:37:49 AM
Howdy, do anyone know of a Liszt piece that is as powerful as the Sonata or the second ballad?
Current repertoir: Chopin: Scherzo no. 3 op. 39, Polonaise op. 44, Beethoven Sonata op. 7, Bach Partita no. 1.

Could you describe what you mean by "powerful" in this context?

I'm familiar with Liszt's sonata and ballades, and listening to them won't make me understand precisely what you mean by "powerful."  The word does not, after all, have a universal meaning as applied to music, so any piece of music could be perceived as powerful by somebody in some regard.

Liszt wrote a multitude of piano works, after all, and there's no basis for making a recommendation from among them unless you can specify the characteristics you're seeking, .

yeah, vallee d'Oberman is so beautiful piece. I really love Liszt and I listen vallee many, many times. It is really difficult work and somebody who want to play this piece will be mature and accomplished pianist.  ;) Sorry for my English.

And except valle I admire
but it is really famous work ;)

Bach/Busoni - Chaccone in d-minor
Bach - II Partita in c-minor

I don´t know how to explain, maybe: long (10-20 min), not childish like the rhapsodies (I think they are), and it should be challenging. so...

Dante fantasia quasi sonata may be a good option. Pure poetry and music imagination with a very well calculated dose of transcendental virtuosity.

It's the 11th transcendental etude (Harmonies du soir).

Vallee d'Obermann is a good suggestion.
Fantasy and Fugue on B-A-C-H.
Solo Totentanz (difficult).
Also transcriptions from Wagner: Tannhauser, Isolde's Liebestod.

What makes the rhapsodies childish?

I like the Legendes :D
It all happens on Discworld, where greed and ignorance influence human behavior... and perfectly ordinary people occasionally act like raving idiots.

A world, in short, totally unlike our own.

Why are the Hungarian Rhapsodies childish? Thrilling, virtuosic, electrifying yes. Childish? I think not...

Too tricky for me to attempt, but I like "Benediction de Dieu dans la Solitude".  I am browsing Cortot's study edition of the piece.  The copy I have borrowed from the library is in French.  The preliminary exercises seem to help.

Chopin etude op 10 no 6

la campanella definitely serves your need of a powerful piece.
anyone every thought about un sospiro? it is quite technical but personally i am shocked by its expressive texture and technical requirements.
those pieces are up higher a notch then the pieces that you are practicing right now. consider waiting it out before trying out anything liszt. After all, how many of us can practice up the requirements for those pieces?
how about liebaustraum no.3 for now? the climax is great
Pieces I am working on
Complete Chopin mazurkas
Pictures at an Exhibition
Beethoven Pathetique sonata
Schumann Papilions

Listen to Liszt's Totentanz

Very powerful - based on the Gregorian chant dies irae and the totentanz - dance of death.

You should check out Scherzo und Marsch, S.177. It's powerful, direct, and effective.

I'd go for the Lizst transcription of the opera "Norma".  The late Raymond Lewenthal used to do it so well.  It really is very hard, of course.

Take Your Seat! Trifonov Plays Brahms in Berlin

“He has everything and more – tenderness and also the demonic element. I never heard anything like that,” as Martha Argerich once said of Daniil Trifonov. To celebrate the end of the year, the star pianist performs Johannes Brahms’s monumental Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Philharmoniker and Kirill Petrenko on December 31.
