Did I do okay in my exam?
on: December 16, 2010, 07:02:33 PM
Hi everyone this is my first post here  :)
I took a Grade 4 piano exam today, not very sure whether or not I'll pass or not :|

Scales: Did them without having to restart any, played the wrong note on one or two and failed the middle of a minor scale

Pieces: They were all quite good apart from my second one, Valse Lente, where I forgot the notes near the middle but thankfully recovered!

Sight-reading: It went okay, better than my Grade 3 by far, didn't keep the tempo though

Aurals: Hm not as well as Grade 3, couldn't think of anything suitable to say for musical understanding and completely made up the clapping the rhythm, but sight singing went well.

Any thoughts? I'm hoping for a Merit :) Thanks!

Well, it's impossible for us to tell without recordings.
Sorry...

I wouldn't worry too much! I think you will definitely have passed, and you might get a merit depending on how harsh the examiner is... They allow for a few mistakes anyway, and it sounds like you didn't muck up any sections too badly! I really mucked up almost everything in my oboe exam and had a horrible tone but I still got a decent pass!

Good luck with the results

I'm not sure which exam system your doing (I'm guessing ABRSM? =/) but I'm positive that you passed, examiners won't fail you for  minor slips and mistakes! We usually remember the bad parts of our performances, but the examiners hear both, and look for the positive parts of your playing. Don't worry, relax until you get your results. Hope you do well!
