You might want to type in a search for "Rosina Lhevinne" on You Tube and observe how she coaches her Juilliard students, often singing over their playing. This was the hallmark of my teacher's approach when I studied with her in New York City. Lillian Freundlich, no longer with us, made it a habit of prodding me and her other students by singing and shaping phrases. She did the same with technical warm-ups including scales and arpeggios. One of course, does not have to have a perfect voice to shape a line. I hope this explains a bit about me and what I gleaned from my studies, but there are no hard and fast rules. Each to his or her own way of teaching and communicating .
Frankly, I thought the 10 year student did well, and believe that she can feel proud of herself. I have probably learned more from her, than she has from me. Any sound teaching benefits from the student in one way or another. The joy of music is its own reward.
