Help picking repertoire :D:D
on: January 21, 2011, 02:34:24 PM
Hellu.

I consider my repertoire to be too small for my age. So now I need help with finding pieces that is quite difficult, and able to use in a competition, but quite easy to get to an ok standard in like a month. This is the only way I know to build repertoire.
The pieces I think of are, for example, Chopin ballades no 2 or 3 and the Heroic polonaise. That kind of difficulty.
Here's the thing I need help with. I am in desperate need of music written around and after 1900..!
So basically impressionism and expressionism. But I really suck at both those eras, so I have trouble finding it myself...

Thx

Ravel's Valses Nobles et Sentimentales, Scriabin's Sonata No. 4 and Berg's Sonata Op. 1 sound about right for you.
If this work is so threatening, it is not because it's simply strange, but competent, rigorously argued and carrying conviction.

What about some Messiaen? One or two of the movements from Vingt Regards sur l'Enfant Jesus: I've played 2, 4 and 11 and they're not too difficult. No. 10 is difficult but very impressive so a really good encore or audition piece. You could also have a look at Prokofiev 3rd sonata.

ooh, brave to call for Messiaen. No, I wont go there :P I've thought about some debussy preludes, but... I don't like them... But I know I will have to learn, so i guess I play some of them..
I've never ever heard of the toccata, so I will listen to it :)

Thx!

debussy preludes sound irritating. his "images" sound like he wrote them while he was drunk
Pieces I am working on
Complete Chopin mazurkas

Have a look at Scriabin.  His writing style changed dramatically over his life, so listen to early, middle and late works.  You might like something.

Look up Albinez.  There is some really challenging stuff in Iberia.

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach
