audition repertoire?
on: January 28, 2011, 01:36:11 AM
I'm looking for a second piece for an audition...it's really not a huge deal because i'm only auditioning for a music minor but I'm not really familiar with a lot of classical repertoire.  I've been playing piano since I was 4 and I'm 18 now, but slacked off a little when I was 11 or 12.  I'm looking for a piece that I can learn pretty quickly without too much difficulty that contains some technical facility (kind of an oxymoron I know) and since it has to be memorized I'd really like to find something reasonably short.  It needs to be in contrast with my first piece, Chopin's Nocturne Op. 9 No. 1 and can't be from the same era. This is a list of the proposed composers on the requirement sheet.

Baroque: J. S. Bach, G. F. Handel, D. Scarlatti.
Classical: J. Haydn, W. A. Mozart, L. van Beethoven.
Since 1900: D. Kabalevsky, V. Persichetti, A. Khachaturian, A. Schoenberg, P. Hindemith, R. Muczynski, R. Starer, F. Poulenc, C. Debussy, M. Ravel, S Prokoviev, S. Rachmaninov.

Thanks!

From the baroque era I suggest you to try scarlatti sonata L 118. It's interesting to play and for your level ( at 18 years) it's easy.
Rachmaninoff is another challenging composer. I advice you to play Etude Tableaux Op.39 no.2. It is easy to play but it's challenging in phrasing. Another piece by Rach you can do in a short time is the prelude op.3 no.2 or elegie op.3 no.1. I play the elegie and I am 8 grade but it can be played even in the 12 grade ( depends on how you understand the piece).
A sonata by Beethoven ( only the first movement ) or papillons by Schumann Op.2 no.1.
I hope that this will help you!  :)
Current repertoire:
Bach Toccata in E minor
Beethoven Sonata op.110
Rachmaninov Corelli Variations
Liszt Paganini Etudes No.2 and 6.
Strauss Burlesque in d minor, Brahms piano concerto No.2.

oh my goodness I LOVE papillons.
it is not a very technical selection but quite elegant.
Pieces I am working on
Complete Chopin mazurkas
Pictures at an Exhibition
Beethoven Pathetique sonata
Schumann Papilions
