Performing for the first time
on: February 01, 2011, 03:11:54 PM
Hi everyone, im currently studying music at my 6t form college. There is a concert next week where evryone is playing a piece on there specialist instrument. I am playing Gymnopedie on piano obviously. Its my first time performing in front of an audience and would like some advice overcoming nerves and performance skill. I have performed in a group before but never alone and im really nervous.

Take a DEEP Breath.

And take your time before you start playing the piece, imagine how you are going to play it before you place your hands on the keys.

Hope this helps.

If you really know the piece, down to ever single note, the nerves will somewhat go away. So really make sure you know the piece. Think all notes, and the dynamics, and so on. Once you've got that right, it's kind of impossible to screw up. And if you still do, you'll find your way back easier.

That works for me, but maybe not for you. You have to find your own way to deal with it...

Good luck with that :)

Hi Graded. Try playing more around people.  I know it may be hard at first.  Go to music stores and try out some pianos. You can go to senior centers and play for seniors.  They usually love it even if you stink.  Go to Hotels where they have pianos hanging around and sit and play. the worst can happen is they ask you to stop. Play in front of people alot. Record yourself ofen. All of this helps.  Invite friends over and tinkle the piano in front of them.  Practice in your mind thinking of the audience you will play for , and then blocking them out and thinking only of your music.

Other things,  - when you walk out onto the stage, walk confidentaly. Walk like it is the audiences pleasure to hear you. do not and I mean this walk out like a dear in headlights.

Just like you practice your instrument  - practice your stage presents.  Go thru it in your mind.  Try it out in advance if you can.  You walk out and smile and acknowledge the Audience.  You note where the piano bench is.  Go thru it all.  If you have a friend have them video tape you as you approach the Piano.

Hope all this helps.

Cheers, Becky

Go to a music store that has pianos there. Start playing for yourself. Only concern yourself with pleasing yourself. When you finish, look around at the other people's reactions. Seeing smiles will boost your confidence and help with the jitters...
