your favorite contemporary pianist composer?
on: February 12, 2011, 07:00:09 PM
What's everyone's favorite contemporary piano "new age" CD(s). I'd have my favorite - i like to introduce Moccio (Stephan Moccio) to the members of pianostreet. He has two really enjoyable recordings "Exposure" and "Color" - solo piano and some orchestra pieces...and his piano sheet music is available for piano students of all ages. https://www.maplemusic.com/dept.asp?dept_id=4353

Looks like a pathetic attempt to disguise an advert.

Should be banned.

New age piano music should be stricken from the earth. If you want great contemporary piano music, listen to something like John Corigliano's Etude Fantasy or Gyórgy Ligeti's piano etudes.

I agree the vast majority of it is absolute bilge (Stand up George Winston, why do Pachelbel's Canon in C major? Was a key of 2 sharps too challenging for you?) but a tiny amount of it is not too bad. Each to their own. Sometimes people just want a relaxing, intrspective melody and you certainly aren't going to get that with the Ligeti Etudes.

Actually, you can. Some of the Ligeti Etudes have some really nice melodies that one can relax to. There is plenty of other music out there that is both melodious and well written.

As in someone who has extreme prowess in both fields, or just a composer that can also play the piano?  Most composers can play the piano, so the latter is sort of a waste of time.  Finnissy is probably my answer for the former.
If this work is so threatening, it is not because it's simply strange, but competent, rigorously argued and carrying conviction.
