East German pianos built in 1960s and 1970s
on: February 20, 2011, 03:04:29 PM
I am going to look at an August Forster grand built in 1975. I understand that there could be quality issues. Any advice on what I might specifically look for when trying to assess the instrument?

If you don’t know pianos know your piano technician… (Boy there is another good line for someone’s signature…….)
Finding instruments in the marketplace is the easy part; there are plenty of them around. Finding a good technician is the more difficult task.
For any piano best to have a technician appraise the instrument for present mechanical condition and then value according to your local market conditions, preferably a technician that does restorative work.

If you think it's is expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur.

Forster pianos I've seen (not many, but a few) seem quite well made. But as Mr Silverwood says, get it looked at by someone who knows the insides of pianos well.
