Song for rain
on: February 20, 2011, 05:50:52 PM
Goal : -I would like criticism, even if your taste is totally different from mine. Tell me if there's something you liked, or something you did not like and why. (Although growing as an improviser wouldn't be so bad either.)

Well, it's been a long time since I posted anything, mostly because I'm too embarassed about my improvisations. But this time the goal is clear. I want no mercy, you cannot hurt my feelings because I know that the piece (Shall we call it that?) is not very good, if something like that can be said about an improvisation.
But what is lacking? Is it my total incompetence at the piano? My lack of knowledge of music theory? Or am I just too stupid? Or all of the above? (Yeah, that's probably it. Sigh.)

Hey, don't talk like that about yourself!!!
Although I can understand how you feel because I think like that about myself a lot of times too and I'm embarassed and all that...
Well I can't really tell you anything smart because I am just a kid and started learning piano last year so I really don't know a lot about music and piano... but I think your improvisations are really interesting!  :) And this one is too! I guess it really is kinda rainy :) and I wish I could describe what I saw in my mind while I was listening to it but I don't really know how to describe it... It's like many different layers moving and changing and flowing all the time... :) don't know how to describe it better...
Well you'll have to wait for the criticism from people who know something about improvisation... I just wanted to say you shouldn't think so bad about yourself! Cause it's interesting to listen to your improvisations!  :)  8)

Okay, I'm listening right now and almost all the way through.  I can tell you that I enjoy the rich harmonies and the general tone.  Thank you for posting, and I think Littletune is right :).

But what is lacking?

Confidence? I don't know the source of your pain here. I have always found something special to hold on to in your improvisations, and I like this one as well. Your harmonies are advanced and interesting, and I would never have thought they come out of ignorance or stupidity. (May it never be!)

If I have any advice, it would be to keep going and keep exploring. You are a naturally talented improviser, and everything will ultimately grows together, as you learn more and discover more (in music and beyond music).
Don't let anyone know where you tie your goat.

Well, my post really seems a lot more depressing than I intended. Perhaps I should learn the use of the smileys to express exaggeration and hyperbole. But putting aside that little misunderstanding, I must thank you for your kind comments. I will take heart and try posting more improvs.

I enjoyed the dark beginning with the arpeggio motif. I also enjoyed a lyrical section that appeared around 2:10 or so. I like how you alternate between darkness and serene lyricism (this is something I'm interested in as well).  That arpeggio motif you used at the beginning reappears in the middle of the piece, an indication that your own conception of form is sprouting.

That was beautiful! I liked the "atonalistic" parts most, where you didn't try to make any conscious melody happening..The ending was beautiful too. I would say it's a tone-poem of some sorts, maybe Poem for Rain? I like the fact that you treated all notes as "not-mistakes", even if you probably don't hear in advance if a certain tone will fit in with what has passed or is to come, am I correct? That is exactly the correct way to move forwards! When you stop worrying about what not to do, we can start reflecting on to do, what we want to say! Great, keep at it!
