"Pangaia"
on: February 21, 2011, 08:20:21 PM
Hi folks! New to these forums, I'm liking them very much. Just posted a Scriabin prelude in the audition room too. This, however, is one of my own recorded piano pieces, "Pangaia". The name refers to pangaea, meaning when all continents ages ago weren't geographically separated. So in other words this is an idealistic tune, something to remind us of that we were all united in the beginning. It's one of many pieces that I'm going to record in a studio during this spring. This is a home recording on my DP. Any comments welcome!

Instrument : Yamaha Clavinova CLP-280 Digital Piano
Home recording 14.1.2011 , soundcard M-audio Fast Track Pro, Pro Tools sofware and Audacity was used for some normalising and conversion to mp3. Although I'm not quite sure why there's a slight clipping at some point, I mean it's not rocket science. But on the whole recording went ok I think.

Hi, utterly, welcome to the forum :).  I listened to this earlier today and I am listening a second time now to refresh myself on your sound.  Your title says this is an improv, but it seems you are suggesting it's in fact a composition?  Or, perhaps an improv you have turned into a composition?

Either way, I like the big strong chords :).

Thank you for your input Maya. Yes I guess that's how all my pieces have gone. They have been improvisations at first, I have just pressed record on my digital piano and let my mind and fingers fly. However you can find structure and meaning in a free impro too, so they turn into compositions, since an improvisation doesn't imo have to be called "Improvisation", it can be called prelude or whatever you wish! Funny that you should say "my style", because my style is actually diversity :) , I have about 50 other impro's/compo's, and most of them are nothing like this :)
Thank's for listening, I will have a listen and tell you what I think about stuff you post! Have a nice day!

That pangaea certainly sounds like a pleasant place.

Hi, welcome. I too enjoyed the chordal sound of much of this piece, it reminded me of some of Jarrett's solo improvisations...have you heard the Vienna Concert? I also like the descending pentatonic runs that interject...neat.

thanks! It's one of my more grand tunes..almost monolithic I think sometimes..Actually they're only partly pentatonic runs, they're simply glissandos on black keys only, LOL..talk about compositional cheapos haha..but they too can sometimes work out ok.
