What piece should I play next?
on: February 22, 2011, 03:42:41 AM
Hey everyone!

So, I'm close to finishing Hungarian Rhapsody no. 2 (I have a few pages left) and I was wondering what I should play next. I want to play something by Chopin.

I did some thinking, and my choices came down to this:

Chopin Ballade no. 1
Chopin Heroic Polonaise

Well, what can I say? I'm torn. Are either of these harder than the Rhapsody? I also have Rachmaninoff Prelude op. 3 no. 2, the first movement of Grieg's Piano Concerto, Debussy's Clair de Lune, Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata first movement, and Chopin's Nocturne Op. 9 no. 2 and Op. 27 no. 2 and Chopin's Berceuse in my repertoire.

Which of my two choices are more difficult? Do you think I would be able to handle it? Much thanks.

have you ever done much chopin before?  If not, don't start on heroic or ballade 1 too soon.  I would reccomend the c sharp minor polonaise first.  If you are experienced with CHopin, then the 1st ballade might do you some good.  Maybe even one of his scherzos...

I've played Nocturnes Op. 9 no. 2 and Op. 27 no. 2 and Berceuse. I've also "skimmed" over some of the etudes and some of the waltzes(I've never played any full ones), and I'm interested in playing more of Chopin. I would probably prefer to play the Polonaise, but I just wanted to get a second opinion.

I've also attempted the Fantasie-Impromptu (yikes!  :-X), but that was almost a year ago. Ballade no. 1 and the Heroic Polonaise aren't as hard as that are they?

I actually didn't think the Grieg Concerto was that difficult. Hungarian Rhapsody no. 2 I can play the lassan without any difficulty, and I think the friska is definitely on its way. It's definitely not "easy", but I personally think its far from being "hard".

Like I said, I tried Fantasie-Impromptu almost a year ago. I'm not a huge fan of it, however, so I don't think I'll be trying it again for a while. (I was when I tried to play it almost a year ago, but I think I've lost interest in playing it.) The thing was, I just couldn't get the polyrhythms right.
