People getting upset over performances
on: February 23, 2011, 10:35:57 AM
I have listened to a lot of performances on youtube and read comments and of course I have heard some fantastic and some horrendous recordings. But what I personally don't understand is why some people get upset to the point they feel the need to hate on the performer, calling them names and putting them down etc. Telling someone that they suck and similar things without telling them why they suck and what they can do to improve is not reasonable in my opinion and to me it looks more like insults rather than opinions and is hateful. If anyone has a genuine answer I would be very interested in hearing it. :)

I don't think there is a genuine answer.  But I feel that the anonymity that internet offers, fosters verbal violence.  I agree with you.  so much of it is gratuitous.  It's like there getting their anger out of their system and not having to answer to it.  Sometimes it's scary.  :o

Hi Ponken. What I find and I even find it on this board is sometimes people arent really smart enough to offer constructive criticism so in order to show how smart they are they try to be cute and snarky. Seems to give them a sense of superiority or something. Kind of like im really good and your just junk. They will say some snotty stuff and try to show how cool they are.

Really cool adults Like Birba  and others offer real help. They take a situation and make it better. Also I find a lot of So called Adults act like kids. They argue about the most stupid things.  They stake out positions that are just silly.  Like oh this performance by Lang Lang sucks . You should hear Horowitz play it."  That is so lame stuff like that. God if Lang Lang's performance sucks what must the rest of us sound like.

People should just remember before they open there mouths  , how can I make things better.

Hope that helps a little.

Cheers, Becky

I found this on YouTube:

Here's some food for thought.. Who are you? Are you world renowned? So what if Lang Lang becomes forgotten. You know who he is, and he's not even aware you exist. Nobody gives a sh*t about you existing other than in your own little world. Do try to keep things in perspective, Putting down people that achieve what you never will is pretty lame.

You are probably correct. It could indeed be some way of showing off in front of others. Some may find it amusing. I for one don't.

It always amazes me how people use the comment pages as staging areas to slag each others off as if everyone wanted to read their silly arguing. Lol

Thanks all for your replies! :)

I'd have to disagree on that. A performance isn't necessarily good just because someone famous like Lang Lang did it. (have you heard his take on Rhapsodie Hongroise no 2?)

What you have to remember about the Internet is that most of it is unmoderated and that means loudmouths with nothing genuine to say can have free rein. As most of these characters have far too much time on their hands, they make up a disproportionate number of the people doing things like commenting on YouTube vids.
Instrumentalists are all wannabe singers. Discuss.

I find crap 95% of Youtube comments I read. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depends on the point of view) there is a tiny group of comments that are really worthy. I found sometimes really useful and interesting information. I said unfortunately because I must dig on tons of crap to find the good comments.

Being mean, snide, callous, curt or obnoxious is just that.  Being "mean" or "hateful" doesn't effect the validity of what someone is saying.  But as far as the people who just leave stupid, angry remarks that don't give any explanation or are purely derogatory, well. . . you just have to understand that most people are stupid, and that that's the extent of their brain power.  Something you need to learn to live with if you plan on using the internet.
If this work is so threatening, it is not because it's simply strange, but competent, rigorously argued and carrying conviction.

Piano Street Magazine:
Women and the Chopin Competition: Breaking Barriers in Classical Music

The piano, a sleek monument of polished wood and ivory keys, holds a curious, often paradoxical, position in music history, especially for women. While offering a crucial outlet for female expression in societies where opportunities were often limited, it also became a stage for complex gender dynamics, sometimes subtle, sometimes stark. From drawing-room whispers in the 19th century to the thunderous applause of today’s concert halls, the story of women and the piano is a narrative woven with threads of remarkable progress and stubbornly persistent challenges.
