Differences between Brands???

In about three years I plan on buying myself a baby grand piano since the piano I have now isn't in too great of shape.  The only thing is I don't know brand I should get.  Are there many differences between brands of pianos besides the prices?  For instance, what charactersitic does a Steinway piano have compared to Yamah? (I know these questions may sound stupid but I really want to make a good investment.)

The reason nobody answered so far is, because your question is way to general. It's like asking "I want to buy a car. Which one should I get?". You need to be much more specific, particularly about how much money you want to spend. Check out the dozens of threads on this forum about people buying pianos. You'll get a feeling for what the reliable brands are. Then go out and play as many pianos you can. Once you have narrowed down your choices, come back with specific questions.

If you want to get a broad survey of most of the different brands out there, consider getting "The Piano Book" authored by Larry Fine. You can check out the latest edition from your local library, or buy it online at https://www.PianoBook.com/ . There is also an annual "Supplement" that carries annually updated info (including price lists) on the pianos.

As you read the book, be careful not to read too much into the "tier system" or "star ratings." The author himself explains the caveats and limitations of the tier/star ratings he put in the book. If you're going to rely on the ratings, be sure you understand their caveats and limitations.

As comprehensive as the books are, they are still no substitute for actually playing the pianos first hand. So, go out and play as many different pianos as you can.

If you want a good piano. Go with August Förster (hand made). Not that they´re cheap but you asked ;-)

i played a 7' mason & hamlin model BB semi-concert grand in a performance and fell in love with it

so, i bought the mason and hamlin model A last year and have been wonderfully impressed with it so far

Steinway  is better than yamaha at equal model.

Do not think about the brands you do not know, just go to a sho and try !!!

But Steinway is the best  !!!!

The fromer brands like mason & hamlin were good at their ages but not now !!! Nowadays is Steinway !!!
