Decent First Classics Book?
on: February 23, 2011, 07:49:28 PM
Hello everyone. I'm looking for some help to find a book of classical pieces for beginners which are as written by the composers, not arrangements. I currently use the "classics to moderns" books but my pupils absolutely hate them! I also find them pretty boring. I'm looking for something with a mixture of pieces from things like Schumann's album for the young (easiest ones), Tchaikovsky's album for the young, Mozart's minuet in G etc. I keep photocopying pieces which I know they will like but they usually get lost, ripped etc. Can anyone suggest anything?
Many thanks

I like the Festival Collection series from FJH music - they each have a selection of Baroque, Classical, Romantic and 20th century pieces. The series starts at a very basic level and continues through to advanced repertoire. There is a CD with each of them as well.

I used for a lot of time the "Easiest Book of Piano Classics", by Amsco publications.
It has indeed a LOT of pieces, although some of them (specially the hard ones) are actually transposed or simplified in order to be easier
here's the link in amazon:

I recommend K. Snell Piano Repertoire from Kjos co. The easiest ones are in Preparatory Level which are in the similar level with Alfred's Recital Book 1 and 2. The level goes up to all the way to Advanced Level.

Thanks so much. Have just been checking these out and they seem just what I'm after, and different too. Will have to look into where to order them from though and shipping costs. Every time I googled the books to see where to order, the sites coming up were all American. Will see if I can find them on some UK sites. Guessing you guys are across the pond!?
Thanks again!

The pieces you mention are all on IMSLP I believe. ??
https://imslp.org/wiki/Album_f%C3%BCr_die_Jugend,_Op.68_%28Schumann,_Robert%29#Scores_2
https://imslp.org/wiki/Children%27s_Album,_Op.39_%28Tchaikovsky,_Pyotr_Ilyich%29#Scores
https://imslp.org/wiki/Nannerl%27s_Music_Book_%28Mozart,_Wolfgang_Amadeus%29#Scores
Your students can print those out, scribble on them, tear them up and have the cat sick on them to their hearts content!
The notebook for Anna Magdalena should have some simple pieces in it too.

Lyric pieces by Grieg??
