what makes music?
on: August 08, 2004, 12:04:25 AM
I was wondering today, how does the subconscious work in such a way that it considers one series of notes a beautiful melody, and another series random junk?  What is it that makes music enjoyable?  It's hard to pin down exactly what I want to ask, but perhaps you know what I mean.

Tough question!

Since I do not know the answer (and wouldn't know where to begin if I did), I'll refer you to a book which Bernhard recommended.  I've just started reading it recently.  It seems to tackle this very question.

Harmonic Experience: Tonal Harmony from Its Natural Origins to Its Modern Expression, by W. A. Mathieu.

Actually, William Allaudin Mathieu. ;)
The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side. (Hunter Thompson)
