how much does a grand cost?

hi, im just a beginning pianist(going at it for a couple of months) and I want to buy a grand piano. not right now cause I'm living in an apartment but we're buying a house soon

and I want to start looking at prices. where is the best place to look for grands online, that ship to FL, US? thx!

:oNemo,It would be very un-wise to purchase a piano with-out trying it in person.Look for dealerships and go try out various makes .They range in price from$ 10,OOO ON UP TO$165,OOO.

hehe i know, but the only one nearby isnt THAT near by :-/...oh well thx anyways, i'll settle for a keyboard for now until we can make the trip

The best place will be Ebay. They have great selection of pianos, uprights, grands, and digitals. Give it a try.

I recommend trying out as many pianos as you can. Two pianos of the same size, from the same maker can sound and FEEL very differently. I started about 2 years ago, and found a really lovely baby grand Baldwin. It has a very light touch which is great for me. Even as a novice, I could tell that I just didn't like certain pianos.
Be aware, however, that piano salesmen can be like car salesman - hard to pin down on price, sometimes heavy handed on the sales pitch.

Ebay may be a good place to see what's out there and what they sell for, but I would never buy a piano off Ebay. I searched for a piano for a good 6 months and played many. What was stunning was the variability within brands. Every Steinway sounds different and Steinway goes to great lengths to tout this as a virtue (it's not). But even among Yamahas there was significant variability from one C3 to another C3. Some of it is simply that pianos are made of wood and every piece of wood is different and some of it was dealer preparation. There's a book out by a guy named Larry Fine called the Piano Book and there are supplements every year. It's an excellent investment and I highly recommend it. I spent $25K on a piano and feel much better about that investment because I did the homework and I know what I got.

As for why Steinway's variability is not a good thing, their variation from one instrument to another is legendary. The good ones go fast. They'll always tell you that they can make it sound any way you'd like, but it isn't so. Steinway is the only company that seems to recommend heavy lacquering of the hammers. I've never understood why this would be necessary, a harder hammer is not a cure-all. If it was every company would be using the hardest hammers possible, the reality is the sound can get very unpleasant.
