Opinions and Suggestions Welcome!
on: March 11, 2011, 05:08:53 PM
Hello, I have recently finished up work on my new website and I would LOVE for my fellow pianists to look at it and tell me if there are any glaring mistakes (music theory related) in it. I am a novice pianist, so I'm sure there are mistake somewhere. The main section where these might be are the 'Piano Lessons' section. My website is www.PlayMyPiano.com I know this may seem like an advertising attempt, but I truely just want some educated musicians to check it out. If you have any suggestions as well, that would be great.  :D

It is an advertising attempt and made all the worse because it was your 1st & 2nd posts. I take it your 3rd post will be along the same lines.

We have been plagued with posts like this in the past and I hoped they had stopped, but it appears not.

I have looked at your website, but I think it is best for both of us that I do not comment.

It may also be buggy and/or virus-infested (got a 'Digital signature could not be verified' warning) so I'd advise avoiding it.
Instrumentalists are all wannabe singers. Discuss.

Cool. Thanks for your help. You guys are really great here. If you actually look at the homepage you will see what the warning message is about. Stop being so paranoid that everyone is out to do bad.

If we knew you a little bit better, perhaps the reaction would be different.

That is why I don't think a first post of this nature is a good introduction.

I need to have a towel under them when they sit on me because they butt smell on me, and hmm I would love for you to check out my site and tell me everything you think

After his 4th post:

I think we can safely close the door on that assumption. Apparently Jon lives miles away from me, spends more time on the computer than at the piano, and doesn't want to smell like canine-arse...

Although I did actually click the site and check it... it seems to have bare minimum on actually teaching anything to do with music.

For all those beginners out there... a Major chord is made up of the root of the key, the Major 3rd and a Perfect fifth all played together...

?????

Don't know what a Major third, Perfect 5th or root even mean since you're a beginner...? Let's check the intervals page below:

(The intervals page)

Sadly enough, I wouldn't trust any site by someone who doesn't teach piano professionally... Yet alone someone who will admit that piano is just a hobby to them, or a computer programmer/technician/whatever.

Hehe, did he really type "butt smell", or is that an automatic substitution for a banned word?

Judging by the way he types in the other sentences... I wouldn't be surprised if those were his actual words.

I think there's some really ugly behavior on display in this thread, but I guess people who pride themselves on being "sh*theads" (as I've repeatedly read here) are what makes this forum the place it is.

Yes, I am sorry piano is just a hobby for me. I did not realize I had to eat, sleep, and breathe piano to be welcome at this forum. Being a computer guy, I realize the Internet is FILLED with rude people always getting their kicks off putting other people down. I guess I just had a glimmer of hope this place would be different...

EXCUSE ME??? First of all... you've just stated that your profession is a computer tech with a hobby in piano.

HONESTLY... Would you learn from someone who's just studying it as a hobby? Would you personally pay good money and trust yourself to be taught by someone who only does piano as a hobby?

I'm not asking for you to eat, sleep and breathe piano, however it would be good if was more important to you thank just 'a hobby'.

Yes the internet might be filled with other people, but they all have opinions and you should respect them all the same.

You want someone with qualifications to teach you, otherwise it's just the blind leading the blind... most likely into a ditch.

Ok, I will help -

1. How will anyone learn any technique from your lessons?
2. What do you really think we can say? You put fur elise as the 'almost expert'? and flight of the bumble bee as 'expert'
3. The moonlight sonata is a the f'ing movement work. The first movement is not the whole piece!
4. Your recordings have mistakes in them (or so you say, more on that later). You actually teach people to play the wrong notes.
5. The scale system was good, I guess...
6. How is the flight of the bumble bee in c-major?!
7. I couldn't listen to any of the recordings.
8. You're obviously not a professional
9. It's a PIECE. A song is something you SING it's not very difficult.
10. You only have 3 difficulties, and you obviously only look at the "omg, this is so fast"-scale.

Do you want me to keep going, or do you get the hint?

I would love for you to keep going...that was kinda the point of this.

1) It is not for learning technique...no website should be really
2) Fur Elise is set as Intermediate, not almost Expert. I think you are looking at the Song rating, not difficulty. Should Flight of the bumblebee be advanced instead of expert?
3) Not sure the f bomb was needed, but thanks for the tip
4) What sort of mistakes for example?
5) Thanks!
6) I tried to look up what key the pieces were in. What key should flight of the bumblebee be in?
7) It wouldnt work for you or you couldn't bring yourself to do it? If the first, what was happening?
8) I know...I made that quite clear
9) Ok thanks!
10) I have 5 difficulties, not sure where you are getting 3 from.

Thanks for taking the time to help me out!  ;D

So you don't even know how to read music and work out the key a piece of music is in - I have 8 year olds who can do that.

I would just like to re-iterate one of my previous comments simply because it seems to be incredibly true as of this point...

...otherwise it's just the blind leading the blind... most likely into a ditch.

From a technical point of view I really like the look of it. I'm a techy and piano is a hobby for me too so maybe I appreciate the features on the site over the theory (Really like the piano animation at the top  ;) ). While I obviously don't know an excessive amount of the theory I think that the site gathers together a lot information I found myself trailing the net for.

I don't think it hurts for someone who isn't a professional/teacher to make a website as good ones are few and fair between. I don't think anyone would presume they can learn all they need to know from a site anyway.

I also didn't realise grammar was such a big deal on posts, while I try to correct my posts after I write them I find it difficult to eliminate all errors. Seeing the responses nearly made me not want to post as I will have mistakes.

I definitely like what I saw and after testing some of the features, I will definitely use it for my students.
Great job so far.

However I would suggest to fix some of the bugs. I tried to listen to a previous performance, but was not working, and then the site went down when I clicked on a different menu.

Sorry for the delay in this response, but thank you to avguste and pianosmyth for the kind words!

I would love to know if this is still happening for you. If so, please give some more details on what you clicked on.
