School Performance???
on: March 19, 2011, 12:35:15 AM
This is it: my school has been organizing a string quartet and they're looking for a piano in order to be able to do different pieces. Now, as one of the few in my school that actually plays the piano (and doesn't just brag about it ;) ), i was thinking on showing up at the auditions. Now, the problem is that i've just been playing for about a year now, and i've just got to about level 4 in the ABSRM system.

Should I audition? in any case, here's what I was planning to show:

Bach's inventio 1 and 4 (in case they're doing any baroque)
Beethoven's Moonlight sonata (1st and 2nd mov)
Chopin's Prelude no. 7 op 28

Hope you could understand everything, if not, please make sure to ask!

Hi jmd1921,

Why not? Go for it !  :)

For level 4, those pieces sound good. Just make sure you play pieces that you're already comfortable with, don't try to cram in a new piece at the last minute. (I learned that the hard way....  :P)

Anyways, I think it's a good idea to audition. Hopefully they don't expect a very advanced player, but even if they do, still be satisfied that you did your best.

 :)
Currently:
Chopin Grand Valse Brilliante
Mozart Piano Sonata K 332
Scriabin Preludes Op 11 no.5,6,7
Bach Prelude and Fugue in G minor

I agree with msicluvr. Don't try to use fancy showy pieces at the audition, but play something you know you can play well.

btw, if I do moonlight I'd do 1st, 3rd or all. You can do 1 and 2 if you like, but they're gonna wonder why you didn't do all. it just brings attention to the fact that the 3rd is too difficult.

I'd just do the first, since it's easy and relatively nice sounding. And it makes sense to just have one mvt, rather than 2 but not completing the set, if you know what I mean

But of course, it's your choice.

I wish you good luck!

I was also thinking about this, and also because i'm trying not to bore them (The teacher isn't a pianist, just a music teacher that plays the piano, if you know what I mean ;)) I will take your suggestion into consideration, thanks!
