Inspiring performance of Gretchen am Spinnrade
on: March 19, 2011, 05:32:09 PM
A very dear friend of mine playing Gretchen am Spinnrade at Cleveland International Piano Competition.  What do you all think?

I liked the erlkonig more.  Not so much because it's more virtuosic but because of the sound.  I don't know whether it was the taping, but this sounded like a digital piano at times.  She's certainly a pianist to be reckoned with.  Any connection at all to THE Elizabeth Schumann?

I've seen her play this too. I'll withhold my opinion this time and just ask: why are you promoting her so much? Shouldn't her skills and connections be enough to get her name out?

I love her playing, and I'm very good friends with her.  I was in the audience the day of these two performances 8 years ago.  Veda Kaplinski (Juilliard chair of piano department) told her that her Gretchen was the highlight of the entire competition.  She made it to the next round.  I've been a member of pianostreet for 6 years, and I often come here to discuss musical topics and performances.

Is it just me or is the YouTube video and audio slightly out of synch... I was gripped by the music (and I love this transcription/arrangement).

Just seemed a shame not to witness the tension in the music and the physical playing of the chords.

But... damn - that sounded lovely... Powerful, but lovely.

Wonderfully played yet again, but I prefer her Erlkonig simply because I like that piece better.

Lovely pianist, but why is she playing as a soloist again - what about the singer?  The voice (eg Christa Ludwig!!) adds deeper dimension to the Lied (as it should after all, it was written for a singer!)

This is repertoire for the piano.  It's a liszt transcription and she's participating in a piano competition.

I really like this!  I took a look at the notes quickly; scary stuff in a few spots!
Interested in discussing:

-Prokofiev Toccata
-Scriabin Sonata 2

this is very nice!  I had not heard this piece before, but it's really quite lovely, and well played.

it saddens me that the members of pianostreet are so quick to question the original poster's motives in presenting it.  it's nice music, and deserves to be heard.  I think the recent hoaxes have people still on edge.

The hoaxes have nothing to do with it, if you are referring to me. I have seen this performer live in performance, and that is the reason why I am questioning the motive of the original poster.
