Nodame Cantabile
on: March 20, 2011, 08:56:27 PM
Has anyone else watched nodame cantabile the anime or live action or both?

How realistically does it portray the music school life?

I never watched it, but i read the manga. It was really good! But I don't know how accurate it is, I'm not in a conservatory.

I saw about 5 mins of the live action and it was nasty.
Stresseman is played by a japanese guy with a blond wig and a huge false nose and his face is painted brown! Go figure!
But worst of all Chiaki comes across as really nasty, not just stuck up. But then again I've only seen 5 mins.

But I recommend the anime to anyone.
My husband is addicted to it at the moment. I think he has a thing for Chiaki. :)
"More Chiaki?"
"No! Its bed time!"
"One more episode??"
"NO! BED!"
"gyabo!"

oh ok .. he doesn't actually say Gyabo! :)

LOL.

The live action isn't that bad. I watched it. It's a lot more condensed, but it's still okay.

I couldn't get used to how Kiyora was part of A oke though.

I haven't watched the live action and I watched a little from the anime, but I have read almost 100% of the original material: the manga.

Although I am not a prodigy (I am of the ones who have to work hard) and I am not studying piano seriously either as a major or at a music conservatoire, I have sympathized with Nodame's feelings about playing the piano, about being yourself when you play despite not exactly following the music sheets.

However, I disliked when her piano goals were targeted on Chiaki, that she was taking piano "seriously" just to be near of him.

You're right! My feminist ideals should have been offended by that! But they weren't!!??
But in the end she learns to love piano and studying for its own sake and Chiaki is tries to steer her away from the final concerto with him, afraid that she'll be satisfied with that, so I think that's Ok because all the other characters are unsatisfied with her ambition.

Gee i think it must be a few days since I've seen an episode! Maybe I'm getting sick of it!

That is one of the good points in the story: character development. Both Chiaki and Nodame and most of the people who interacts with them change, even little by little.

The only moments which I also disliked (but I understand they are because of comical relief), are in Paris when Chiaki is still acting violent with Nodame, and when in Christmas he had his abandonment complex, compared her with his dad, felt she was cold and cruel towards him and evaded him(didn't he see himself in the mirror?), and just a few minutes later, after making up, he hits her because he wants to listen her piano (he could have told her that he wanted to listen her like a normal person instead of recurring to violence, but again, I understand, rule of the Funny).

What I couldn't understand is Nodame's way of thinking after Chiaki and Rui played the Ravel's Concerto until almost the end of the story. Why couldn't she understand that when Chiaki played with Rui it was because of business and not because he wanted something else with Rui?, could she feel the same if Chiaki had to play with another female pianist?

The only part that's not realistic is how she played the Rach 2 by ear after listening to it once and how she improvised petroucka after learning it in transit to the competition

There are many unrealistic moments when it comes Nodame's hearing ability. There are musicians Who either born with the capacity, work, improve or all mentioned before, but yes, no one has reached the inhuman level of Nodame.

However, she also has had other limitations, which have made her more human and more credible as a character, there are other stories like in Piano no Mori or August Rush where the prodigies have everything and they Just only need guidance.
