suggest a CD or MP3 download
on: March 29, 2011, 10:02:05 AM
First of all sorry if this is on the wrong board and couldnt really find a place for it
I've just started learning the piano and the more I play the more I want to learn
Im looking for suggestion of a CD or compilation I can buy to put onto my Iphone to listen to
I have no musical knowledge whatsoever so finding it a bit of a mine field while looking online (sonata this and Invention that) i have no idea what all this means
im trying to look for some famous classical pieces with just piano solo's not all the orchestra etc so I can just listen to the piano on its own
just want to some song with a bit of feeling and nice melody etc
Can anyone suggest anything, im living in the UK but can downloads albums

well, much as I am loathe to suggest such a thing, perhaps the best thing for you is a best-of cd, such as this or any of its many cousins:
https://www.amazon.com/Best-Piano-Classics-Frederic-Chopin/dp/B000GPIPQK/ref=sr_1_2?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1301395023&sr=1-2
of course, once you learn a little more about music, you will find this to be wholly inadequate, and will want to focus on complete works, individual artists, specific composers, etc, but this will at least whet your appetite and is relatively cheap.
if, however, you want to go the more scholarly route, try this book:

Thanks for the reply, Ill take a look
Is there any particular pianist that anyone can suggest..
I know that this is a very general question and everyone will have the own taste etc
But throw a few names out that I can look up (someone who plays with feeling and passion) not some technical robot is prefered ;-)

thank you scott,
the recomendation is spot on...wonderful pianist
As for homework, think this quote say it all ;-)
Svyatoslav Richter is the first among his peers. A happy combination of a mighty (super-mighty!) spirit with depth, purity of soul (chastity!) and consummate skill, is indeed a unique phenomenon." (PORTRAIT OF AN ARTIST by Heinrich Neuhaus)
