20th Century Piano Pieces
on: March 30, 2011, 12:58:54 PM
Hey there, I need a little help ;D . My teacher just announced that in 5 months there will be a local Piano Festival happening and said I had the potential to learn, there is a competition for Piano Solo and the repertoire or program should come from the 20th century composers. I only know a few of them 5 actually because I concentrate to much on the music of the Baroque, Classical and Romantic era....

Could you please suggest a good piano pieces fit for a competition, coming from the 20th century composers

Thanks.... ;D

do you need a long piece about 10-15 min, or short about 5 min?
Now playing:
Prokofiev - Sonate in d-minor op. 14
Bach/Busoni - Chaccone in d-minor
Bach - II Partita in c-minor
F. Chopin - Barcarole in F sharp major, Op. 60
                Ballade in f-minor

In addition to providing the time, can you also tell us the general level of the competition, and your latest pieces you are learning?
Bach - Partita No.2
Scriabin - Etude 8/12
Debussy - L'isle Joyeuse
Liszt - Un Sospiro

Goal:
Prokofiev - Toccata

Are there any specifics other than 20th century?  Does it need to sound in the modern idiom?  Or does it just have to be composed in the 20th C?

You may wish to start looking at composers from your own country.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Since your name is Chopin lover, why not try some early Scriabin?

Hi!

The only 20th century pieces I know range from the start to the end. Debussy, I learnt Le petit negre there last year for a grade exam. It short and there's not a lot of different musical themes, ideas going on in it. But it's technically challenging and light in feeling. There's also Erik Satie, if you want minimalistic type of music or than there's Einaudi. He's music is really well worth a listen to. Not too sure what it's like technically as I haven't gotten round to learning any yet. But I don't think he's meant to be anyway too demanding.
