Schubert, Sonata A minor D784
on: April 01, 2011, 01:25:31 PM
I am currently working on Schubert's A minor sonata (D784), and it's particularly the third movement I am struggling with. At the moment, my teacher says it sounds 'too vertical' - a nice way of saying disconnected, I suppose. Any thoughts on how to achieve the right flow and character? There are so many different (and beautiful) motifs and themes, but I feel a bit like I am just jumping from one to the other. How much rubato are you 'allowed' to use when playing Schubert, for example?

Try singing along. You could sing or hum. This should give you a start. Schubert, after all, was heavily influenced by the human voice and wrote hundreds of songs.
