Intermediate Liszt piece
on: April 03, 2011, 07:42:28 PM
Hello everyone! Let me introduce myself. My name is Filip, I'm from Slovakia and I'm 14 years old. Glad to be here. I'm sorry I only joined and I'm already begging for help. So, excuse me, please. :>

I find getting particular advice from person very helpful, so I came to ask here. I just completed Chopin's Fantaisie Impromptu and an étude by Slovak composer Ján Cikker with name Potok a Búrka (Der Bach und das Gewitter), also Haydn's Piano Sonata HOB 32 B major's 3rd movement (
), Kramer's first étude and Chopin's Nocturne op. 9 no. 2.

Currently working on Haydn's Piano Sonata D Major HOB 24's 1st movement (
)

As I did Chopin's Fantaisie Impromptu few days ago, my teacher said we could have Liszt. I'm very, very confused when it comes to his piano work. I'm looking for a more technique oriented song, maybe an étude would be nice, but I don't know if I'd yet be able to play it. I'd also appreciate, if it could be more of a dramatic character at faster tempo. I don't know what to expect, though.

Thank you very much.

Hello. I have listened to the Liszt Paganini Etudes and they all seem very difficult. I listened to some of the Transcendental Etudes. No. 10 is very dramatic. But I find that the more dramatic you go with Liszt pieces the harder they are, but that could just be me. No. 1 doesn't seem as hard, but very technically challenging. The only other etudes I can think of are the Concert Etudes, which includes Un Sospiro, a wonderful piece. These don't seem as difficult (like number two).

You can try one of those etudes, although you might want to have a listen to Liebestraum, which is not as difficult. If you want something easier than that, listen to a Consolation.

Good luck with your studies.

- Natalie

Welcome, Filip.

Further to what Natalie wrote about etudes by Liszt, there's a pair called Gnomenreigen and Waldesrauschen that are considered somewhat less difficult than those of the other sets.  I recommend you ask your teacher for guidance in choosing a piece by Liszt.
What passes you ain't for you.

Try "Ab irato" the etude of perfection. This one is dramatic and easy enough to play.

If you think that is easy, you are a bugger sight better pianist than I am.

Which of course would not be difficult.
