Yamaha G2E
on: April 08, 2011, 11:12:09 AM
I'm in the market to upgrade to a baby grand.  Looking at a Model G2E  Serial # 130001.  I was told it was about 8 yrs. old.  Anyone know the age of this piano and tell me anything about this model?  Thanks.

Yamaha went beyond six digit serial numbers in 1970.

If you think it's is expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur.

For Yamaha ...
Serial numbers in 1960 began at 122,000.
Serial numbers in 1961 began at 149,000.
(Data taken from the Blue Book of Pianos, available online.)
Your 130,001 serial number is somewhere in between. The piano is 50 years old.

If you were told that this piano is 8 years old, you were being deceived.  When you find yourself dealing with someone crooked, run away. Fast.

Or maybe you've mistakenly dropped a digit from the 130,001 serial number?

Can we trust the Blue Book?
Well, I found a 3-year-old online ad for a used G2E, serial number 1,953,104.
https://www.hoobly.com/0/0/775847.html
The ad claimed it was made in 1975. That's in precise agreement with the Blue Book.

Here's the complete data set for Yamaha:

Thanks so much for your help.  I'm sorry, in reviewing the serial number again, it was preceeded by the letter E - Serial # E130001.  Does this shed any new light on the age?  Thanks again.

I believe a letter before the serial number refers to a revision of the model.

At least that is what I was told about my C3 which has an E in the serial number,  It was preceded by an A, B, C, and D.  This info came from a Yamaha rep at a conference, so is most likely reliable.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach
