Which Sonata Should I Choose?
on: April 08, 2011, 08:02:00 PM
Next year, for my Music Minor, I must put on a small recital. I'm already planning on:

- Chopin's Waltz in C-sharp minor, Op. 64 No. 2
- Liszt's Liebestraum No. 3

I'd like to have one more piece, preferably from the classical era, so I was thinking a movement from a Beethoven sonata. The ones that I'm thinking about are:

- Op. 10 No. 1
- Op. 13
- Op. 26
- Op. 31 No. 2

I'm also considering Mozart's KV 310.

Does anyone have any opinion as to which would make a good complement to the two pieces? Or if there is something, roughly within the same range of difficulty, that might complement them better?

I think you should choose the Classical sonata before choosing the Romantic pieces (or the other way around), as you should have constrast in your performance. If you went with Op. 10, then I would go for the Liebestraum. If you went with Op. 13 (depending on the movement?), then I would say the Waltz would be better. If you went with Op. 26, then I would also go for the Waltz. With Op. 31, I'd say the Liebestraum would go well with it.

Good luck with your studies.

Interesting. So, if I was considering either Op. 10 or Op. 31, what would you recommend replacing the Waltz with?

Oh I'm sorry I thought you meant either one of the romantic pieces, not both, and I read it wrong (I do that a lot). I would not play the Op. 13, as it is already so overplayed. I think Op. 26 or Op. 10 would go well with the other pieces.

Thank you for the help. I think I'm going to go with the third movement from Op. 10.
