Finger edema
on: April 11, 2011, 05:40:36 AM
I had an infection in my right index finger a few months ago. Treated with antibiotics and basically got better. However, my finger is still swollen. Not red and painful, just swollen. There's no foreign body, at least no foreign body detectable by ultrasound.  I talked to an orthopedist about it and he said it's normal for it to take up to a year for edema to resolve after a finger infection. Playing the piano makes the swelling worse (temporarily), so I'm stuck doing a lot of LH exercises and the LH voices of various Bach pieces I want to learn. Anyone ever had this problem?

No, but I know people with hand problems. Did you tell the doctor you're a pianist? Most of these hand injuries doen'st bother 'normal' people, but can be a nightmare to pianits, so the doctors normally doesn't do everything they can... Or that's what I've heard.

pianesten1989, yes, I told him I'm a pianist. Indeed, if I weren't this wouldn't bother me much at all, as you rightly say.

What about compression bandaging? Maybe discuss with your doctor whether applying compression would speed the recovery?
