Spiral Bound Sheet Music
on: April 13, 2011, 04:13:26 AM
Just found a site that sells spiral bound sheet music: poloniussheetmusic.com. Prices are a bit high and the catalogue is kind of small but hey, thank heavens somebody's doing it, because I'm tired of taking already pricey books to Staples and having them rebound.

My commercial interest detector is flashing. I cannot see why anyone with a pricey book would dream of having it spiral bound.

It looks like these people are simply taking public domain scores, putting on their own cover and cheaply binding it. Pretty worthless really. Better to print it out yourself and get it bound at Staples if you don't like loose sheets.

This should be removed as a feeble advertising attempt.

I assume they're simply photocopies of out-of-copyright editions. Perfectly legit and the prices look reasonable. Spiral binding is preferable to a bad book-binding job (e.g. 'perfect' - glued - binding) but the spirals get bent over the years and they tend to stick out on a bookshelf. A well-made sewn binding is always the nicest way, but it does put a couple of $ on the price and in small quantities, which is what I assume Polonius is making, is completely unfeasible economically.

The black ink cartridge I use (HP60) is probably only good for 100 pages or so, and it costs $15.

I'm holding out for a super huge electronic ink display.

In regards to the "commercial interest indicator," phooey. Books that won't stay open have been a pet peeve of mine for a long time, especially with Dover editions (which are not pricey, but they fall apart). Pricey books I'm referring to are more like the Kalmus reprints of opera scores, which can get absurd considering the quality.

I've printed lots of scores from IMSLP and Piano Street and put them in a three-ring binder. It works okay, but try printing out a 300-page score (like a complete set of piano sonatas or something), double-sided, with a regular desktop printer. It's cheaper, sure, but sometimes it's not worth the hassle.

I think Polonius does do mostly reprints of public domain scores; the ones I got definitely were. It is what it is; thought some folks might be interested.

Take Your Seat! Trifonov Plays Brahms in Berlin

“He has everything and more – tenderness and also the demonic element. I never heard anything like that,” as Martha Argerich once said of Daniil Trifonov. To celebrate the end of the year, the star pianist performs Johannes Brahms’s monumental Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Philharmoniker and Kirill Petrenko on December 31. Piano Street’s members are invited to watch the livestream. Read more
