Master Degree Recital/ All Variations Program
on: April 13, 2011, 02:24:35 PM
I am going to give an recital of my master degree of piano performance.
I am thinking of giving a "all-variations-recital" program
I decided to play Bach/Busoni Chaconne
                         Beethoven Sonata OP. 109
And I just cannot think of another variations that suit my programme.
As my hands are not big and I am small (skinny) I would not decide Brahms's variations, Schumann symphonic etude or Rachmaninov's Corelli's variations...
Actally, I am thinking of Copland's Piano Variations....but it seems very difficult in the rthythm and there are chords larger than octave...(i have small hands.... :-[)..
or Franck's PRelude CHorale and FUgue...but this piece is not related to the topic of "variations..."

Anyone has any suggestions for me?

The one piano piece by Mendelssohn that I like: Variations Serieuses Op. 54.

You don't NEED big hands for the variations you listed. My friend just performed Schumann's symphonic etudes and his hands are my size (reach a 9th).

Don't worry about rolling big chords. I do it all the time! The only piece that I've found so far that would REALLY pose a problem is Schumann's Toccata in C Major, Op. 7. But that piece poses many OTHER problems too, haha.

Stephen Hough did a very interesting recital of waltzes and variations :) It was excellent!

My suggestions....

"The Harmonious Blacksmith" Suite - Handel

Piano Sonata No. 11 - Mozart
9 Variation on a Minuet by Duport - Mozart

Variations in F Minor - Haydn

Piano Sonata Op.26 - Beethoven
Piano Sonata Op.111 - Beethoven
32 Variations in C Minor - Beethoven

Wanderer Fantasy - Schubert

Variations on a theme of Robert Schumann - Clara Schumann

Variations on a theme of Chopin - Rachmaninoff

Variations Op. 27 - Webern

Hope you like them :P

how about the complete Goldberg Variations?

Serkin once did it as an encore . . . Perhaps that's a thought?

Gubaidulina, Chaconne

Ooo!  Haven't heard that one, but I played celesta with our Wind Orchestra for her "Hour of the Soul" (or something like that, can't remember exactly - mezzo soprano and wind orchestra).  I'll have to listen!

Looks like a program of Paganini's 24th caprice variations.
