Very new - any tips for left/right co-ordination?
on: April 15, 2011, 08:49:34 AM
What's a good strategy for learning left/right hand parts on piano? I'm trying to learn a song (link to sheet music at bottom) and have no real piano experience. Each part separately is quite easy but it becomes a a mess when I try to pull both parts together. Should I just learn my left hand part until I can play it without thinking, then throw in the right, or should I try and learn them both simultaneously.
I've only managed to play easy songs like Chopsticks and the first movement on Moonlight Sonata so far. I thought this one looked pretty easy but the left/right hand co-ordination is giving me trouble.

Here's what I do when I have left-right coordination problems: I play the hands together, but very very slowly. So slowly that I can coordinate them perfectly. This might be extremely extremely slow motion, but if I can get the rhythms right, then it works. Then, I repeat that a few times. Then, I repeat it a few times a bit faster, and then play it faster and keep increasing the speed until it gets up to tempo.
If you have coordination problems and you know the hands separately, then practicing them separately won't help. You've just got to play them together slowly, correctly, until your muscle gets the memory of how to coordinate them. Then, you can play them faster until you get it up to the proper tempo.
By the way, this might not happen in just one sitting... don't get frustrated if it takes a few days.

When I first learned the Song of Storms (a number of years ago), I remember having to look at the sheet music while playing both hands very slowly until I got it. Sometimes it helps if you occasionally "just do it", ie, try it up to speed and see how it goes.
The good thing about rhythms is that the more you learn, the easier it gets to learn ones that are more unique and different.. So keep at it!
