I am slightly puzzled as to how Freddy Kempf, the pianist in this video, is able to drop some of the sound in the Grave of Beethoven's Pathetique. The link is below.

I am having trouble replicating this sfortzando (spelling?), any help would be appreciated.

Hold the pedal down, then release while still depressing the keys.
