Small tribute to John Gill
on: April 22, 2011, 02:43:10 AM
I was hoping it was just a rumour, but sadly it seems John Gill died a few days ago. His was a huge and original talent. By all accounts his life was a full and very merry one, so no sense in posting something solemn. He didn't play much slow stuff so here is some fast James Scott. I'm sure he would have played them much better.

Ted I took the time to ring John's manager to confirm if he had passed away and very sadly it was true. I was also given Mr Gill's email address which I urge everyone who appreciated him to send an email to, please spread this around. The emails collected will be put into a book as a memorial for his parents who have survived him, his father over 97 and mother 76.

There is an open invitation for those to attend his funeral which is the coming Thursday 28th May 2011 12:30pm at the Karrakata Cemetary.

I did not know of John Gill other then seeing his name a few times on this forum, and I don't really know what stride piano encompasses, but I'm sorry for his loss to the music world and especially to his family and those closest to him. My prayers are with them all.
I also greatly enjoyed your playing, Ted.

Hi Ted,
Sorry to hear about your friend John Gill passing away, evidently too early in life. I am not familiar with his work, but evidently he was a great artist in ragtime and stride piano in particular. I'm sure that during his performing career that he brought much joy to his appreciative audiences. I enjoyed hearing your two Scott pieces offered here as a tribute to him. His being in the cosmos now is all the more reason he will hear them. Of that I have no doubt.
