NERVOUS WITH RECITAL
on: May 04, 2011, 02:56:06 PM
I'm really nervous about my upcoming Piano recital at a nearby school. I'm confident about playing my piano piece but sometimes when the big day is up, when I get on the stage I get nervous and mess things up. How can I control my nervousness when I'm on stage and just before I get on stage?

Hi chopinlover23,

I know exactly how you feel. Just last saturday, I totally messed up the first few measures of my piece because of nerves. Thankfully I recovered soon after, but judges look at a performance as a whole. I ended up with a bronze medal, which I am grateful for, but I probably would have done better had I not messed up.... :(

Anyway.... I think the reason I messed so badly is because I forgot to take my time before playing. When you first sit down at the bench, try taking a few breaths. Think about how you're going to play your piece, tempo, touch things, like that. And then, when you feel like you are ready and calm, begin to play. This technique usually works for me, so hopefully it can work for you.

Good luck at your recital ! :)
Currently:
Chopin Grand Valse Brilliante
Mozart Piano Sonata K 332
Scriabin Preludes Op 11 no.5,6,7
Bach Prelude and Fugue in G minor

I've heard that eating a banana helps with nerves. So if you like bananas, try that :)
Take deep breaths and relax. Focus on the music, not the being on stage part, and have fun!

Good luck!
