Miaskovsky 3 Intro, Outro
on: May 06, 2011, 08:04:48 AM
I've been looking through the archives of the TASCAM DR-07 recordings and found this from August 31st, 2010. It is a snippet of my relationship between improvisation and practice (if you could rightly call this practice...it seems more of a trial run to see how far I could go). What we have is:

Introductory improvisation
Brilliant start to the Miaskovsky 3rd Piano Sonata
Not brilliant fail in the second theme
Jump to end of Miaskovsky 3rd Piano Sonata
Outro improvisation and goodbye.

Now, you must know that I am interested in so many things, among them great and rarely heard Russian piano music of the 20th century. I work on lots, but I perform little. I had thought I had an opportunity to play this particular sonata, so I started working on it. The opportunity collapsed, so I dropped the sonata, moving to my other responsibilities. I'd had a bigger portion than this in my fingers shortly after this recording, but have not touched it since. This makes me sad, and listening to the potential, I think I should return to it. It is much more fitting for me than the Chopets. Ah well...people at the university seemed rather perplexed by the Miaskovsky and were not interested in hearing it. Why cause strife?

I enjoyed this! I think I actually liked your outro improv better than the sonata you were playing, haha. Who are these people at the university? I'm glad I don't have to play for "people at the university" haha!

Miaskovsky is for sure music that fits you very well, I'd love to hear the whole sonata from you :)

Thanks, Derek. Really, I just mean the immediate audience, the people who come to my recitals. Thinking back, in the the last 5 years I've worked on an awful lot of music which I never did perform, and much of it would be considered obscure by many. The music that I actually have performed in that setting in the last 5 years is all great music, but only a fraction would be something greatly not widely known and accepted. If I stay on another year, I'm going to have to take the next step and really experiment with "the programs of my dreams!"
