Thank you for sharing that! I've never listened to anything like it before.

Anytime.  Glad you liked the piece.  John Lewis was a mother on piano, and Milt "Bags" Jackson was no slouch either on vibes.

Literally just now off the CD, Arrau doing from Debussy préludes bk. 1.  I've read through this many times, but never really learned this one.

Reminds me of Scarlatti a bit.  I like Arrau's tempo, so I think I'll use that for when I get around to playing it.

Clever.  Did not expect it to go that way.

Reminded me of this one.

Titular track called "Bluesnik," from Jackie McLean's album of the same name.

Speciically, Kenny Drew's piano solo.

Yeah, just blues in Bb, but Drew knocks me out.  He attacks each line from the beginning.

Mmm, yeah, I guess an analyst would focus on the flourishes in tritones, and the things in major thirds, but I think it's a super bad way to improvise on a blues.

ETA Darn, I think I should write it out on paper.  No, not that difficult to write out, but I should just do it and have done with it.

I actually just had a dream about this piece.  More like a nightmare though.  Somehow I had all my music somewhere on a table.  And then a class of adults met in the room.  Some naive but well-meaning people took my pile of music and put one piece on each table.  After the class no one knew where my music was because people probably thought they could take the single book on the table for some reason.  I was pretty much enraged but knew it was pointless for some reason.   I wasn't going to get my stack of music back.  And you can't replace it.  Then I was thinking of what I lost and remembered this piece.
 That's when I woke up.

I haven't heard this album in years, but it's unusual in how much pedal Jack McDuff uses on the Hammond organ.  No, it's not classical level pedals, but it's unusual to use that much pedal in jazz music.  Throughout the album, really.  I know there's a 3/4 size doube bassist credited, but if you listen carefully, you can hear the difference.

I don't mean between the string bass and the organ bass — that's obvious — but between the LH Hammond bass plus some attack on the pedal, i.e., "regular" Hammond bass, and how much pedal Jack McDuff was applying, even on mid-tempo swingers.  It's a lot of pedal tone, which struck me as unusual.  Usually it's not that good a sound for jazz, but this is kind of a lugubrious album, so it works.

And Grant Green is, as usual, exploiting the W-H "dim" (ETA the octatonic symmetrical scale starting with a whole tone interval) scale for his lines, and Yusef Lateef blows a good horn throughout the album.

Not really one of Green's more "relaxed" albums, andt the tension on that set is quite high.  Quite possibly because of the tension between having essentially two bassists.  I wouldn't know.

It also reminded me I couldn't remember the tune "Old Folks," which I'm glad I was able to play along and remember.  You know, some tunes you don't play for years, even simple ones, so it's good to refresh the memory.

To say I am a fan of Ifukube would be a bit of an understatement. He actually wrote a tonne of great concert music. Perhaps my favourite is "Ritmica Ostinata" for Piano and Orchestra. Definitely worth a listen. And if you like the violin sonata, his "Deux Caractéres for Violin and Piano" is also worth listening to. And the Symphonic Fantasias… I could keep going on for a while… so much great music.

Pretty good at keeping time for an old man.  Srsly, this CD is literally at this track ATM.  There are other tunes I like better from this set, but it is actually the track that happened to be on at the time.

Thinking about editing an mp3 version of the disc cutting out the audience applause, which is loathesome to me to hear.

Great album, though, beautifully recorded, and shows GH wasn't just a blues-based hack on jazz piano.

Not my favorite jazz organist, but he has his moments.

ETA Apparently YT pulled the recording.  It's Larry Goldings on the Hammond B3 in a trio (organ, drums, guitar) from his album *As One* playing that corny bit of 1960s nostalgia "Time of the Season" in a jazz context, and he acquits himself pretty well, especially in varying the registrations of the organ, and taking advantage of a "drier" sound to build some lines around perfect fourths, like Larry Young, in a way.

Probably best known to the wider musician public as the person responsible for the character "Hans Groiner" and the series of humorous videos.

But, whatever, that's what I was listening to from the album at that moment.

I got really into musicals during quarantine and my greatest discovery has been Hadestown. I took a few singing classes when I was younger, so I really appreciate the talent of the cast and band. The composer, Anais Mitchell, is absolutely phenomenal.

Also found my favorite song as a piano version, too:

I'lready goen the Chester A. Arthur/Duane/Lemmy look a million times in the last year.

Hey  It's easier than shaving the whole thing!

Yes, before I work up my grit to safety-zazor (Astra Platinum 2-sided blades, if you please) I always do the John Waters pervert moutstache for a minutes just for fun.

He can get away with it....but I cannot.  Perhaps he and Divine were the only ones who shared the untold secrets of shaving.

At least I have been told more than once to "get off the stage!" by surly drunks at a few bars.

Winning!
