Taking a break
on: May 11, 2011, 06:18:58 PM
Hey guys,

I was wondering, is it normal for people when they stop playing the piano to forget how to play? I moved to another country last year and since then I haven't had the chance to play at all. every now and then I do go to some piano stores and have a look around, I do still know how to read difficult pieces on scores and all that. but when I go on the keyboard, It's like I totally blanked out the pieces that I've learnt in the past (I've been playing for 4 yrs and reached a quite good level)...and obviously my fingers are like butter :( now my question is, for anyone that took a break and started to play again..
is it difficult to start again? is it normal to blank out like that? what's ur experience?

That's completely normal. It takes a few months to catch up with the former level. But on the other hand it may turn out that some things have had time to sink in during the break and worked in your subconscious. So you will practice for a while up to your old level, but then you may realize that there has happened something in the meanwhile, maybe a lot :)

thanks for that! It might actually be good to refine and be bolder on the pieces that I've studied since last year! ur right this break might not be that bad!  ;D fresh air is good sometimes
