Endurance for LH
on: May 12, 2011, 11:38:07 PM
Hey all,

I am currently playing through Polonaises Op 40 #1 and Op 44 by Chopin, and am noticing my LH is tiring through both pieces. I feel it is either an endurance problem in general, or it is specifically due to incorrect Octave technique in the LH, however my technique is the same for my right hand and that does not tire quickly whilst playing octaves.

I'm looking for suggestions as to some etudes that specifically target Octaves and endurance. So far the Op 25 Etude in B minor (not sure on the number, 11 i think) by Chopin would be a good starting point as the entire etude is essentially double octaves. Also thinking of the Op 10 #12 for strengthening my left hand in general.

Does anybody have other etude suggestions? Perhaps some not by Chopin so i can explore some different composers too.

Scarlatti K. 44 and K. 54 offer some good practice with octaves, and there's nothing like a party where people play and listen to Scarlatti sonatas.  The Chopin etude, opus 25 no. 10, offers good practice with octaves, but is too intense and enraged in its tone for some people's taste.  My housemate felt it was crawling through his veins.
